Kottakuppam is a beautiful village situated in the coastal area near the union territory of pondicherry. Normally it is the part of tamilnadu, but people living here depends the pondicherry for all essential purpose like education, medical, transports, employment, business etc., Kottakuppam, Chinna kottakuppam, Rahamat nagar, Bharkhat nagar, Sodhanaikuppam, Nadukuppam, Kottamedu, Thandharayankuppam, Jamiath nagar, Indra nagar, Chinna mudaliyar chavady, Peria mudaliyar chavady are all areas under the control of Kottakuppam Town Panchayat.

         The climate is generally hot and humid. In summer (May-July) the temperature reaches up to 42? C (107? F) while in winter (Dec.- Feb.) it is slightly less hot, 18? C (64? F). The Monsoon season starts in Sept. and lasts till Nov.

In the East Coast Road from Chennai to Pondicherry, Kottakuppam is a landmark of tradition. In the book Arts of Islam. It is believed that there were Forts in Kottakuppam. But there is no clear evidence for this. In the map there is no area named Kottakuppam before 200 years. In the French Rule, Kottakuppam adherent to Muthialpet serves as camp place for foreigners.

 Kottakuppam has got its name ‘Kottam’ refers to the land area and ‘Kuppam’ refers to the Coastal Area. Since, this area lies near the coastal region. It got its name ‘Kottakuppam’. The Southern part of this region is now known as Kottamedu is very notable.

Kottakuppam area is greeted by everyone for its immense work on Islamic principle. Major populations in Kottakuppam are Muslims.  Kottakuppam Jamia Masjid  was built by Arcot Nawab in 1867. Now it is extended and decorated to make it showy by the people in and around Kottakuppam.
